Asahikawa — Ms. Sasaki (pseudonym, 50s)
We decided to rent a JOYCart only one week before a family trip. My husband, 56, had suffered a burn and could not walk without a cane, and we were considering cancelling what might be our last long family trip while our son was still in high school.
With the departure date close, we contacted NOAA and they arranged things just in time so we could use a JOYCart on Ishigaki Island in Okinawa.
My husband explored the island on the JOYCart while our son and I rode bicycles. We had been worried about the many white-sand paths, but it never got stuck and had enough power to travel comfortably.
Without the JOYCart, I think we would have given up on the trip. It helped us protect an important family memory.

Kobe — Ms. Nishiura and her 83-year-old mother
My 83-year-old mother has numbness in her hands and feet and finds long-distance walking difficult. She also fractured her femur while travelling several years ago and continues rehabilitation. Wanting her to enjoy going out, we bought a JOYCart about a year ago and checked routes together to places such as her clinic, community centre and restaurants.
Our neighbourhood has many hills, which used to make even nearby outings stressful for her. Now she uses the JOYCart for community gatherings, shopping and medical appointments. She likes that it is easy to operate and, in stores with wide aisles, she can ride it through shopping and checkout. We can also fold it into the car for trips, where it has been very useful for sightseeing and shopping.
By combining walking with a cane and using the JOYCart, her range of activity has expanded. She says it has become indispensable to her everyday life.
Warabi, Saitama — Mr. M (80s)
After using several electric tricycles, he became the first user of the newly released JOYCart.
Tajimi, Gifu — Ms. F (80s)
Uses JOYCart for leaflet delivery in a town with many hills.
Nagoya, Aichi — Mr. O (50s)
Uses it for a longer commuting route. His wife loads the JOYCart into the car so they can go out together.
Yachiyo, Chiba — Mr. Y (80s)
Lives in a housing complex surrounded by steep slopes; his wife gave him a JOYCart as a gift.
